Angolan music in the United Kingdom is preparing to enter one of the most significant phases in its history, thanks to the vision and commitment of businessman Miguel Neto, who has taken the initiative to create a platform capable of promoting, organising and supporting Angolan artists living in Britain.

On 20 June, London will host the first edition of the Annual Angolan Music Festival in the United Kingdom, an event organised by MN Produções in collaboration with Dadas Eventos. The festival is expected to mark the beginning of a new chapter in the promotion of Angolan music and culture across the UK.

The organised presence of Angolan music in the United Kingdom dates back to the 1990s. During that decade, veteran Angolan folkloric singer Brandão Amalada decided to settle in Britain after participating in a musical tour with other Angolan artists. Around the same time, DJ Joca Moreno released his first album, which became highly successful on dance floors within the African community.

It was also during this period that businessman Martins Vuite established a recording studio that became an important hub for Angolan musicians. There, DJ Joca Moreno recorded his second album, featuring collaborations with renowned Angolan artists such as Justino Delgado and Yola Semedo.

The 1990s also witnessed the emergence of the musical group “Os Makotas”, founded by José Utola and his cousin Sbasta. The group became one of the pioneering forces behind the evolution of modern Angolan music in the diaspora, helping to inspire a new generation of artists.

Shortly afterwards, the original members of Zona Kidi arrived from Angola to join Utola, further strengthening the Angolan music scene in the United Kingdom. Over the years, several other talented artists emerged, including Zeylan, Zigueré, SP, Prodígio and Toni Laf, better known by his stage name Zádio Tanzi, who gained recognition as a semi-finalist in the first season of Britain’s Got Talent.

Today, decades after those pioneering efforts, the Angolan artistic community in the United Kingdom stands before a historic opportunity. Miguel Neto, widely recognised as one of the community’s most influential entrepreneurs and a strong supporter of cultural initiatives, believes that Angolan musicians need greater organisation and strategic direction.

“Our artists need a structure that represents them, organises them and helps guide their development. That is why we intend to establish an Association of Angolan Artists in the United Kingdom, capable of supporting their careers and strengthening the promotion of our culture,” he stated.

The Annual Angolan Music Festival is therefore much more than a concert. It represents the first major platform dedicated exclusively to promoting and celebrating Angolan music on the shores of His Majesty King Charles III’s United Kingdom.

More importantly, the festival marks a historic milestone for the Angolan community in Britain, creating a permanent stage for showcasing national talent and preserving Angolan cultural identity among future generations.

On 20 June, the community is invited to be part of this historic occasion. If you have not yet purchased your ticket, now is the time to secure your place at an event that promises to be remembered as one of the most important milestones in the evolution of Angolan music in the United Kingdom.

History is still being written. This time, to the rhythm of Angolan music.
